Grade 2 Modern

Modern dance is a rhythmic dance style that originated in America before spreading worldwide. It is often featured in musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities.

Our classes follow the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) modern syllabus, which is well-established and provides vibrant, energetic, and fun grades filled with exercises, dances, and amalgamations to develop students. These classes complement ballet training by improving core strength and overall dance technique.

ISTD Grade 2 Modern Theatre is suitable for pupils aged 7-9. By this level, most children are working diligently to prepare for the ISTD Grade 2 Examination. Our goal is to guide students to a stage where they are ready and confident to take their Grade 2 Modern Exam, ensuring they have mastered the necessary techniques and skills.

In Grade 2 Modern dance, children start to focus on specific muscle areas, learning the locations and functions of these muscles in their bodies. The curriculum includes forward and side stretching exercises, as well as abdominal exercises, promoting flexibility and core strength. Simple steps are combined into sequences, such as Combination Steps, which foster maturity and independence as children perform these sequences in smaller groups.

Modern dance encourages self-discipline and self-expression, helping children develop their listening skills and follow instructions. The ISTD Modern syllabus teaches children to work both individually and in groups, enhancing coordination, good posture, strength, and suppleness. It also provides an opportunity for children to enjoy entertaining music and engage in longer, more complex exercises, allowing them to express themselves freely while developing essential dance skills.

Students will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and progress by performing in our annual show at the Parr Hall. This event is a highlight of the year, allowing students to experience the thrill and joy of performing on stage in front of an audience.
